Background Corps’s mission is to create powerful opportunities for older adults to meet society’s greatest challenges. Our vision is to see older adults in service to children as an integral part of the education strategy across America. Through this generational exchange, children succeed, older adults thrive and communities are made stronger.
Now in 22 cities, Background Corps works to solve serious social problems, beginning with literacy. Today 2,000 Background Corps members serve as tutors and mentors to children in urban public schools and after-school programs, where they help teach children to read and develop the confidence and skills to succeed in school and in life. Research shows that Background Corps boosts student academic performance, helps schools and youth-serving organizations become more successful, strengthens ties between these institutions and surrounding neighborhoods, and enhances the well-being of the Background Corps members in the process.
